Exec Who Brought Fresh-Brewed Coffee to Wawa Goes All-Organic in Serving Other Chains via Golden Valley Farms It wasn't so long ago that you couldn't hope to find fresh-brewed coffee at local c-store. As director of marketing at Pennsylvania's Wawa chain during mid-70s, John Sacharok envisioned need for on-the-go coffee and set Wawa on path to respected purveyor of hi-quality brew. Sensing opportunity at other chains, John consulted for cos like Circle K, then launched Golden Valley Farms Coffee Roasters in 86, targeting c-stores and fast-food eateries with quality but affordable offering. Biz thrived enough so that, just about 2 yrs ago, John decided, "I've had enough mediocrity." As market test, John, ceo, and sister Maryann Baldassarre, prexy, went out on limb by converting 400 food service customers to organic without raising price. Most were family-owned cos like Golden Pantry in Ga and Graham chain in Chicago. When #s came in showing continued growth, it was clear that coffee biz has evolved to point where organic can thrive even at c-store level (tho most customers choose not to advertise the coffee as organic because of pejorative connotations among some consumers). Since then, West Chester, Pa-based co has devoted itself entirely to organic lines, all shade-grown and certified by Smithsonian as bird-friendly. It offers coffees to foodservice customers under Redstone brand or retailer's private label, while also offering coffee to consumers under Golden Valley brand.
USDA Certified
USDA Certified organic coffee and other products will carry the USDA Organic seal. Legally, only products that are truly in compliance with USDA organic standards are allowed to display this seal.
In order to pass USDA standards, strict qualifications must be met. There are labeling requirements, handling requirements and production requirements as well as detailed record keeping proving that these requirements are being met. Unlike other “certifications” or endorsements that can be purchased and displayed on products, the USDA organic certification must be earned. Check out http://www.goldenvalleyfarms.com/ to find great USDA organic coffee.
